The last week of 2018 is flying by and the year's final weekend is upon us.

Daytime temperatures should warm up into the 40s today and near 50 by Sunday, so get out and enjoy the bright winter sunshine and fresh, crisp December air.

We've begun compiling an events listing for New Year's Eve parties around the area and are adding new venues as we receive information. Go here for what we've been able to compile thus far. Check back for updates.

Here is what's happening Saturday, Dec. 29:

— Muscle Powered Saturday hike to Prison Hill: Dead Truck Trail and North Loop, 9 a.m. Please join Muscle Powered for our last Saturday hike of 2018! Park at the entrance gate to Silver Saddle Ranch, which is where we begin the hike. A moderately challenging hike that travels up Dead Truck Trail, around the North Loop Trail, and then returns back down Dead Truck Trail. Entire hike, including distance from the parking area, is seven miles. The link below displays all the hiking trails. Our hike will be on the red Dead Truck Trail, black part of the North Loop, and return to Dead Truck. Hiking time plus breaks is approximately five hours, https://carson.org/home/showdocument?id=38830.
The hike begins with a walk along the Silver Saddle Ranch road, and then a climb that includes a history lesson where we see a 1950 Chevrolet truck unable to handle the terrain. The views of Carson City and Carson Valley are stunning at the top, and the peaceful and relatively flat North Loop trail provides wonderful views of Slide Mountain to the north. We will stop for lunch along the North Loop.
Closed-toed shoes, snacks and water are required. Hiking poles are highly recommended for the occasional steep and rocky terrain. Dogs are not allowed on this hike. We will cancel by 7:30 a.m. that day if there is significant inclement weather.
Please check the MusclePowered web site calendar, our Facebook page, or check with Jo Foster. Contact: Jo Foster at 319-504-3309, jf.prairie@gmail.com; or Larry Marinel at larryamarinel@gmail.com if you have questions. Hope to see you on the trail!

— Free 12-week U.S. Citizenship study class in Carson City. The ESL In-Home Program of Northern Nevada is here to ensure that all people have the opportunity to make the American Dream come true for them. When Our Students Succeed, Our Nation Succeeds.
Therefore, we are again sponsoring a free U.S. Citizenship Study class beginning Saturday, Oct. 13, 2018 for 12 weeks from 2 to 4 p.m. The location is the Digitorium Room at the Carson City Library, 900 N. Roop St., Carson City.
Work pamphlets for each lesson will be distributed with assistance in completing the application at no charge.
Because we find that most immigrants do not have enough saved for the application fee, even working 2-3 jobs, the ESL In-Home Program has opened an account to help those who do not have the full fee of $725. The ESL In-Home Program will provide a no-interest loan for whatever balance is needed.
To register and reserve a seat, call 775-888-2021 or Email: eslinhomennv@gmail.com.
